What to Pack for a Long-Haul Flight

On a flight of eight hours or more, what's in your carry-on decides whether you arrive wrecked or ready. Here's a practical packing list, grouped so you can tick it off fast.

Comfort

  • Layers. A hoodie, cardigan or large scarf you can add or remove as the cabin temperature changes.
  • Comfortable socks. Your feet will thank you once your shoes come off. Many travelers wear compression socks on long flights; if you have circulation concerns, ask your doctor what's right for you.
  • Slip-on shoes. Easier at security and in your seat.

Sleep

  • Eye mask to block cabin lights and screens.
  • Head support so your head doesn't drop the moment you doze off.
  • Arm support if you like to lean forward onto the tray table.
  • Earplugs or noise-cancelling headphones.

Entertainment and tech

  • Downloaded shows, podcasts, audiobooks and playlists
  • A charged power bank and the right cables
  • Wired headphones or an adapter for the seatback screen
  • A paper book or e-reader for when screens get tiring

Staying fresh

  • Toothbrush and travel-size toothpaste
  • Face wipes and moisturizer, since cabin air is dry
  • Lip balm
  • A clean shirt and underwear in case of delays or lost luggage
  • Hand sanitizer

Food and water

  • An empty refillable bottle to fill after security
  • A few snacks you like, in case meal times don't suit you

Documents and essentials

  • Passport, visas and boarding pass
  • Any medications you take, in your carry-on rather than checked bags
  • A pen for arrival forms

Liquids rules differ between airports and countries, so check the current limits for your departure airport before you pack toiletries.

Save space on the sleep kit

Instead of three separate items, our 3-in-1 Travel Sleep Support Set packs an eye mask, padded head support and arm wrap into one pouch, leaving more room in your carry-on for everything else on this list.
